About Hansen

Our History

On January 11, 1970, the first phase of Helen Hansen School was dedicated. This original section (the "Round House") was completed in October of 1969. In January, 1974, the second phase was completed. this is the united containing the office, kindergarten rooms, and gymnasium. In 1985 the third phase of Hansen School was completed to the south. this new addition added nine primary classrooms, an art room, and reading rooms to the building. In the summer of 2000, we added three new classrooms, a music room, and a band-orchestra room, thanks to the Option Tax. In the future, there are plans to build a new cafeteria, a new media center, an additional classroom, and improve the parking lot. Helen Hansen Elementary School is dedicated to the memory of Miss Helen Hansen, educator and citizen of Cedar Falls.

Miss Hansen began her teaching career in 1922 and moved to Cedar Falls in 1927, where she was assigned to Miner School. This assignment began forty-one years of service as a teacher and administrator at Miner School. She passed away in June of 1969. Helen Hansen Elementary is an extension of Miss Hansen's dedication to children. A portrait of Helen Hansen is displayed in the hallway across from the office.
